First step: choosing the right place
Whether it is a built-in or a piece of furniture, most of the time the bookcase is an integral and immobile part of the home. Its position has to be chosen carefully.
The bookcase, though, is also a truly versatile piece of furniture that adapts to different rooms in the house. It can be placed in the living room, in the hall, in the master bedroom or in the kids’ bedroom, and if you are booklovers as we are … in all of the above! Here for you are some other hints about where it can be placed:
- It can be used as a dividing wall between two rooms, thus creating a wall bookcase that does not take away light from the two adjacent rooms.
- Any nook or indent on the wall is also an opportunity to make it more functional with a built-in or free shelves of the right measure.
- A custom-made bookcase can be designed to be placed under the stairs, becoming a piece of furniture that exploits space otherwise difficult to use.
- It can be designed to go up to the ceiling, helping to take advantage of the space vertically.
- It can also be used to exploit the space above a door, creating a bridge bookcase.
- Often it is enough to place shelves that act as a book holder.
Custom made bookcase
As we have seen, the bookcase can be really useful for occupying those spaces that would otherwise be lost. So let’s leave room for the imagination to furnish the basement, a niche, or the area above the door with a custom-made bookcase. After designing your personalized bookcase, we recommend contacting a professional who can advise you on the best solutions in terms of costs.
Bookcase with TV compartment
Why not merge the bookcase with the living room furniture? This idea is widely used by those who do not have a free wall to devote entirely to the bookcase. There are several solutions to associate the two functions. You can create a bridge bookcase that embraces the entire television compartment, or you can place columns on the side, perhaps closed with glass doors to let you glimpse the books inside.
Bedrooms
It is easy to create a bookcase in the master bedroom or in the kids’ bedrooms. In the master bedroom the bookcase can be obtained between two wardrobes. In this way, the continuity of the wardrobe is broken, lightening it and creating at the same time a comfortable compartment for storing books and ornaments. If the room is in the attic, shelves can be placed behind the bed to be used both as a bedside table and as a bookcase.
In children’s bedrooms, the bookcase cannot be missing. It is usually associated with the desk. So why not create a bridge bookcase with the desk underneath? The most classic conformation is a bridge wardrobe, with an enclosed little bookcase that runs above the desk or the bed. Therefore, we can design a bookcase consisting of two columns, a desk, and modules above the desk.
This is the minimum configuration, but we can indulge ourselves by associating open compartments for storing books with closed compartments for storing other objects. And of course, do not forget to play with colors: in the kids’ bedroom, we can dare with some combinations and hints of brighter color. Sometimes, though, it is preferable to simply use shelves that can be placed above a freestanding desk or large bookshelves set next to the wardrobe. If you have room, a matching color bookcase like the one in the above picture is undoubtedly the easiest solution among all those described.
Once we have chosen the ideal place, we can see how to design a bookcase accordingly. Remember, a every self-respecting bookcase has been designed first!
